National Reading Month: The Power of Early Literacy
The ability to read starts long before a child enters school. Research shows that children who are read to daily develop stronger language skills, have higher cognitive abilities, and even perform better academically later in life.
However, many families do not have the books they need to foster a love of reading. In low-income communities, there is often just ONE age-appropriate book for every 300 children. Without access to books, many young children can miss out on this critical foundation for learning and growth.
At Room to Grow, we’re changing that story. We provide families with children aged 0-3 with personalized guidance, community connections, and essential material resources, including nearly 130 books.
Studies highlight that:
Parents who read to their infants daily see higher cognitive and socioemotional skills by age one.
Children who grow up in book-filled homes receive three years more schooling than those without books.
Kids who hear more words in early childhood enter kindergarten better prepared to succeed.
Through our National Reading Month campaign, you can help ensure more children in Boston and New York have access to books that inspire and educate.
