Population Profile
Families who come to Room to Grow are living at or
below the poverty level and come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Currently,
70% of the families we work with in New York and 68% in Boston are led by single
mothers. Of the families we serve, 56% in New York and 48% in Boston are Hispanic;
25% in New York and 31% in Boston are African-American; 9% in New York and 2%
in Boston are Caribbean; 7% in Boston are Caucasian; 4% in New York and 10% in
Boston are of mixed race or other. While most of the families we serve receive
some level of government assistance, such as food stamps and WIC funds, approximately
17% in New York and 57% in Boston hold full or part-time jobs, yet still care
for a child and live in poverty.  |  |  |
